Electric

Appalachian Power - Is a subsidiary of American Electric Power and provides reliable, low-cost electric power throughout Montgomery County.  American Electric Power is the nation's second largest investor-owned utility and has over 420,000 customers in central and southwestern Virginia. Montgomery County is tied to the world's largest fully interconnected ultra high voltage (765,000 volt) transmission system that serves 48,000 square miles across portions of seven Midwest states. Virginia Tech Electric Service (VTES) - provides reliable, low-cost electric power electricity only to the campus of Virginia Tech, the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center and to certain sections within the Town of Blacksburg.  For more information, contact 540-231-6437.

Natural Gas

Atmos Energy - Provides service to the majority of Montgomery County-Blacksburg-Christiansburg natural gas consumers.  For more information about commercial/industrial natural gas service, contact Eric Brackens at (423) 926-2122, extension 228.

Roanoke Gas Company - Services only the eastern portion of the Montgomery County in the communities of Elliston and Shawsville.

Telecommunications

Fiber Providers

Verizon provide telephone service in Montgomery County, which deploys a technologically advanced network that benefits both small and large customers. In addition to Verizon data and phone service, LUMOS and Citizens in collaboration with Mid-Atlantic Broadband provide Fiber optic data service. Among the advanced products and services offered to customers are:

  • High-speed data services including DS1 (T-1), DS3, OC-3, OC-12, OC-48 and OC-91
  • Extensive fiber optic mileage throughout the New River Valley
  • Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), SDS, Frame Relay, etc.
  • SONNET technology which provides reliable networks
  • Skilled professional employees providing reliable and efficient installation and repair

Broadband Service:

In addition to high speed data services, three companies in Montgomery County offer High Speed Broadband internet service to homes and businesses.

Water and Wastewater Sewer

Blacksburg-Christiansburg-VPI Water Authority - Wholesale provider of water to Virginia Tech and the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg.  New River, the largest river in southwestern Virginia, is the the Water Authority's water source.  Draining an area of 2,748 square miles the river provides the Water Authority with an average daily flow of 3.2 billion gallons to tap from. Water withdrawn from the river is pumped approximately 3 miles  to the the Water Authority's 12.4 mgd treatment plant on Peppers Ferry Rd. Finished water is then pumped via twin 16-inch water mains for distribution to Virginia Tech and the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg.

Town of Blacksburg - Provides water and wastewater services to residential, commercial and industrial customers within the incorporated town of Blacksburg.  Limited service is also available to some consumers just outside the town limits in the unincorporated area of Montgomery County.   

Town of Christiansburg - Provides water and wastewater services to residential, commercial and industrial customers within the incorporated town of Christiansburg. Limited service is also available to some consumers just outside the town limits in the unincorporated area of Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Public Service Authority -  Serves residents and industries in the unincorporated areas of Montgomery County.

Solid Waste Disposal & Recycling

Commercial industries are responsible for making arrangements for garbage pick up and disposal. The Montgomery County and the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg do not offer commercial waste pick up. These services may be contracted independently from a waste management group.

Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority - Provides Montgomery County-Blacksburg-Christiansburg with a fully integrated solid waste management plan; which includes closed landfill management, education, a transfer station, recycling, and state-of-the-art technology.

Waste Management of Blue Ridge - Salem - A subsidiary of Waste Management, Inc., is the premier waste services provider in the Greater Roanoke & New River Valleys.
